Thanksgiving holiday is just over, and this is the time that many happily pull out the Christmas decorations and begin the house overhaul into a magical and sparkling abode, unthinkable for any time but Christmas!
The first day of Advent is December 2nd this year, the Sunday of the “Prophecy” candle on the advent wreath. Traditionally it is more somber in tone than other Advent meditations, with its emphasis on not only the prophetic foretelling of the Messiah, but also the themes of his position as judge, and the end of this world of woe. It seems incongruous to think of the woes of the world as we rev up the engine of festivity and cheer, but that message is firmly woven into the beautiful gospel message of Christmas. It isn’t all angels and golden gifts!
In light of the prophecy theme of the first candle, and reminders of accountability, now is a good time to prepare the heart to give time and effort to remember the less fortunate this season. The message of the prophets always included God’s concern for the poor, and sent His Only Begotten Son as one who was poor, with not even a private home at his coming.
While arranging for the advent celebration of lighting candles and devotions centered around the most joyous of the earth’s events… make your home ready for sharing, for loving hospitality, and take time to keep a peaceful spirit. Remember:
Proverbs 15:17
Better is a dinner of herbs where love is, Than a fatted calf with hatred.
The joy is within the love, the celebration is in the heart… everything else is the adornment and the garnishing of the main course at a wonderful feast of the spirit.
